Cambridge has great schools, great teachers and great parents. I want to ensure that we build on that excellence together!
I have chosen to seek election as a Public School Trustee for Cambridge & North Dumfries for one simple reason: to serve my community
A Trustee should be:
- Accessible & Approachable: a trustee who cannot be reached and who makes no effort to be visible in the community is not much help to anyone. I commit to being a trustee who maintains a high profile in the community and who can be reached through a variety of means: phone, email, blog, Facebook, etc.
- Thoughtful & Balanced: trustees are policy makers who must act on the advice of the others. A trustee must be willing to accept and thoughtfully consider that advice while balancing the needs of the various stakeholders: parents, tax-payers, students, teachers. I commit to being a trustee who makes every effort to seek and consider advice from as many viewpoints as possible before making policy decisions.
Our schools should be:
- Small Community-Based Schools: I firmly believe that smaller schools offer far more opportunity for community-building than larger schools. I also believe that the closer a family is to their school, the greater the level of engagement and the stronger the relationship with teachers. The trend in Cambridge (and the region) has been to reduce the number of schools in favour of larger schools that are farther from the families they serve. If elected, I will advocate for smaller schools and more of them.
- Green Schools: Our public schools (and, indeed, all public buildings) represent an incredible opportunity to both generate electricity and reduce the demand for electricity within our community. There are thousands of square feet of underused roof space that could be used for solar and almost every school has a greenspace large enough for a significant geothermal installation. These initiatives would not only save the Board some utility expense but would also provide a valuable and ongoing learning opportunity for our children. If elected, I will advocate strongly for at least one renewable energy source in operation at every public school in Cambridge and North Dumfries.
- Digitally Literate Schools: the ability to understand and take advantage of digital media (ie: the web) is a core skill that every child must have in order to be successful in the 21st Century. The current technologies have evolved very quickly and in a way that has largely leap-frogged an entire generation – the boomers. If elected, I will work to ensure that every teacher and board employee is properly supported as they develop the necessary skills to work in a digital world.
